The Spanish League, also known as La Liga or Primera Division, is considered to be one of the best competitions in the world. La Liga has been dominated for most of its history by two teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Meanwhile, the Spanish national football team has gained its share of honours and accolades. The team has qualified for the fiercely competitive FIFA World Cup tournament a total of 12 times since 1930. Though they have yet to win the championship, the team continues to be a major competitor. In the European Championship, they were the champions in 1964 and 2008, and runners-up in 1984. Furthermore, Spain has won two Olympic medals in football. The team captured the silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the gold during the 1992 Barcelona Games.

In addition, the country's youth teams have also proven to be successful in football. Spain's U-20 team won during the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship. The U-17 team, on the other hand, won third place at the 1997 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
