Casares
town in the photo above, is the capital of the Casares region in the Costa
del Sol, southern
Spain.
The region of
Casares is shown in the map to the right, and the whole area is an area
of beauty and nature, part of the
'Andalusian Network of Protected Natural Areas'. Volcanic rocks
on the eastern side of the Sierra Bermeja mountains which is home to a rare type of fir
called the pinsapo. And limestone rocks on the western side of the
mountains. All designated a Protected Natural Area.
Julius Caesar visited Casares in Roman times and supposedly bathed in the sulphuric waters
of the Roman spa baths on the
road from Casares to Manilva. Records suggest these baths cured
his liver complaint.
Casares town is the capital of the Casares
region. A small town
made up of whitewashed buildings built on the slopes of the mountain, with some of the houses seemingly
impossibly built on the steep hillside in such a rugged area.
At the centre of Casares is the 12th century
moorish castle and castle walls now in ruins. The narrow streets of the
town have many steps and slopes lead to the central town square with
cafe, restaurants, bars and shops and a weekly market. See videos of Casares area.
Casares beach is a sandy blue flag beach, safe for bathing with
gently shelving shores. The beach has 2
chiringuitos, beach bars both with car parks, Casares Chiringuito and
Bahia La Sal Chiringuito, making the beach accessible to all people.
The
beach stretches for miles in either direction along the Meditterrean Sea,
from Sabinillas and Duquesa in one direction to Estepona in the other
direction. There is a walkway between these two extremes although not
yet complete along the whole beach.
The
mountains of Sierra Bermeja have been called one of the most beautiful
places in the Costa del Sol, virtually untouched, designated a 'National
Area' with many
walks and
hikes in Casares area.
These mountains are home to birds of prey including eagles and Griffin
vultures. Plus a pre historic type of fir called 'pinsapo' or Spanish
fir, grey in colour with unique spiral pattern of needles going around
its stem.
