Casares region, called the municipality of Casares, is in southern
Spain in Andalucia on the Costa del Sol. Casares is bordered by
the municipalities of Estepona, Manilva and Gaucin. Casares region stretches from Casares beach up into the Siera Bermeja mountains
of Andalucia.
The whole Casares region is part of the
'Andalusian Network of Protected Natural Areas' as an area of
beauty and nature. With volcanic rocks
on the eastern side of the Sierra Bermeja, it is home to a rare type of fir
called the pinsapo. And limestone rocks on the western side of the
Sierra Bermeja which are designated a Protected Natural Area.
Records of Casares region date back to Roman times with mentions of the Roman spa baths on the
road from Casares to Manilva. Julius Caesar supposedly bathed in the sulphuric waters that
feed the spa, and was cured of a liver complaint.
Casares town is the capital of the Casares municipality. A small town
made up of whitewashed buildings built on the slopes of the mountain, with some of the houses seemingly
impossibly built on the steep hillside in such a rugged area. At the centre of Casares is the 12th century
moorish castle and castle walls now in ruins. The narrow streets of the
town have many steps and slopes lead to the central town square with
cafe, restaurants, bars and shops and a weekly market. See videos of Casares area.
Casares beach is a sandy blue flag beach, safe for bathing with
gently shelving shores. The beach has 2
chiringuitos, beach bars both with car parks, Casares Chiringuito and
Bahia La Sal Chiringuito, making the beach accessible to all people.
The
beach stretches for miles in either direction along the Meditterrean Sea,
from Sabinillas and Duquesa in one direction to Estepona in the other
direction. There is a walkway between these two extremes although not
yet complete along the whole beach.
